A well-crafted chair has the power to improve our posture, take a load off after a weary day and look attractive in its chosen setting. Whether you’re looking for an aesthetic darling for a kitchen table or office, or a stylish seat to sink into, read on for some stellar choices to start with.

Milan-based brand Kartell is regarded as the international heavyweight when it comes to coupling high design (through collaborations with some of the most renowned names in the art, architecture and industrial design) with comfort, thanks to their Italian artisan know-how.

The Kartell catalogue boasts some all-time best hits whose classic yet modern personalities stand the décor test of time. French designer Philippe Starck is behind the brand’s most iconic, recent collections. The resounding star among these is arguably Louis Ghost, which adds a touch of elegance and irony with its evanescent and crystalline appearance. This transparent armchair is made with a single mold injected with polycarbonate. A minimalist homage to the baroque Louis XV style, the seat is available in matte, glossy, transparent and coloured polycarbonate including smoke grey, white, black, straw yellow, sunset orange, ice blue, and crystal green. It is stable, durable, shock and weather resistant and can also be stacked six high.

Kartell Masters

The Masters chair, also by Starck, is the winner of multiple awards in the design world. It is a powerful tribute to three symbolic chairs that have been re-read and re-interpreted. The unmistakable silhouettes of the “Series 7” by Arne Jacobsen, the “Tulip Armchair” by Eero Saarinen and the “Eiffel Chair” by Charles Eames are fused into one. Made of metallic modified polypropylene, the Masters is light, practical and stackable and can be used outdoors as well.

Kartell Piuma

One of Kartell’s latest designs is the Piuma (feather) seat designed by Piero Lissoni, whose name reflects its ultra light weight. The chair is an exclusive in the world of industrial design; measuring just a few millimeters thick (2 mm max), it is the first time that a material containing carbon fiber has been injection molded.

American Leather Comfort Recliner

For those who just want to recline and watch hockey in style, we found the perfect chair on a recent visit to Montreal’s luxury furnisher Design Louis George. Made just how you like it, the high-tech and ergonomic American Leather Comfort Recliner® is a solid one-piece armchair available in eight styles, with additional customization options on the back, base and legs. With independent back and footrest operation, you can recline without engaging the chaise-style ottoman or give your feet a lift without adjusting your back. The weight-balanced mechanism moves smoothly with you, almost effortlessly, with no need to push on the arms. When it comes to fabric, “you can choose from hundreds of color and texture options, from family-friendly microfibers to beautiful chenilles, or natural classics to nubby layered wovens,” explains Glen Asfour, sales manager at Design Louis George. Sounds like the perfect present ...to yourself!
