Italy produces some of the best wines in the world, but you don’t have to be an expert to enjoy Italian wines that are both affordable and delicious. This mini list of 5 wines from diverse Italian producers offers variety, history, and flavor. Each one is perfect for numerous occasions, but you should certainly try them as soon as you can. Oh, and did I mention that you don’t have to load your credit card to get them? They are all available under $25, so head to your local SAQ and start sipping.
Masciarelli Trebbiano d’Abruzzo 2017. SAQ # 12635097. $14.10
Just as Masciarelli made famous Abruzzo’s Montepulciano grape, they also brought to new heights the quality and reputation of the Trebbiano grape. This particular Trebbiano in Abruzzo is a relative of the grape grown in many other areas of Italy, but in the climate and soils of Abruzzo yields wine with fantastically expressive fruit and a gorgeous balance of round concentration and mineral freshness
A nose redolent of citric fruits, cut hay and roasted herbs. Medium body with a delightful acidity complemented by stone fruit flavors and a cleansing finale.
Velenosi Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi 2017. SAQ # 11155665, $15.55
Cantina Velenosi was established in 1984, with the mission of reaching a balance between taste and colour. Blending traditions and technology, Ercole and Angela Velenosi have redone the winemaking process and established a estate which spreads the soul of the Piceno territory through its unique wines.
Japanese pear with green apple aromas. Medium body, creamy with flavours of honeysuckle, dry fruits and lime cream. Great long finale.
Rocca delle Macìe Chianti Riserva 2015. SAQ # 12989750, $15.95
For well over 40 years the Zingarelli family with passion craft some of the finest wines in Tuscany, providing meticulous attention to the vineyards, and championing Chianti Classico DOC.
Leather, black fruit with concentrated black pepper sauce. On the palate, juicy and fleshy with beautiful concentrated fruit layers and caressing tannins. Drink it now or keep it for the next 3-5 years.
Campagnola Le Bine Valpolicella Classico 2017. SAQ # 13425930, $17.75
Campagnola is located in the heart of the Valpolicella wine region and was founded over 100 years ago in 1907. The winery is still in the hands of the Campagnola family, and consistently receives international awards for its high quality wines.
Ripe cherry and raspberry coulis with a dusty minerality on the nose. Gutsy with fleshy tannins. Drink it now or keep it for the next 5 years.
Camul Spumante Prosecco Superiore 2017. SAQ # 12797846, $22.15
Camul Spumante is a Prosecco from Vini Tonon. The company was founded by Pietro Tonon in 1936 and for three generations the Tonon family has treasured its winemaking philosophy. He has preached that excellence is achieved only through continuous research, special care of the vineyards and a meticulous harvest Light and refreshing with pleasing bubbles, attractive autumn fruits and delicate floral touches. Good acidity and a light creamy flavour. This is a stylish and gloriously attractive Italian sparkler.
