The two wines of Porta del Vento were one of the most interesting pair tasted at the latest trade tasting of Bambara Selection.
The Porta del Vento winery is located at 600 metres above sea level in a valley forming part of the Valdibella (Camporeale) district in the province of Palermo ( Sicily), in the Alcamo and Monreale DOC appellation areas.
It is here that Marco Sferlazzo cultivates about ten hectares of vineyards planted with old catarratto and perricone vines, planted in this area more than thirty years ago by skilled farmers who were able to align the plants following the steep slopes of the land, orienting them towards north.
The norm is biological and biodynamic farming.. In fact, no synthetic product is used among the vines and an effort is always made to understand and maintain the balance of the vineyard ecosystem.
The Voria Frizzante sur Lie Blanco ( $27.95, 12 pack case) is a sparkling wine made from Catarratto grapes grown and harvested by hand in small boxes It is refermented in the bottle with addition of must to the base wine. Unfiltered and not degorged, with the presence of yeasts in the bottle.
It had beautiful nuances of ripe orchard white fruit with subdued floral nuances. On the palate, it was refreshing with a long and harmonious with a delicate bubble and lovely roasted apple finale. It should be perfect as an aperitivo with the shellfish in season at the moment.
The Luna Calante, Catarratto 2017 ( $34.50, 12 pack case). Catarratto fermented in contact with the skins for 30 days, traditional vinification in open concrete tanks at an ambient temperature of about 24 degrees, frequent punching up by hand within 24 hours.Aged for ten months in stainless steel tanks.
A beautiful SIcilian white. Incredible mineral fragrances with touches of honey and wax bee. A wine of great body with a beautiful balance. Very fresh with a crisp taste. Long and persistent with an excellent aging capacity.
