There are few times in the year where we can just say “to heck with it, I’m going all-out vixen,” or “forget the pants, I’m wearing my funky printed swimming trunks all day.” These are the days we dream about, the tender week-long breaks to sunny destinations or countryside escapes where we can ditch the everyday and take on a new persona. No one there knows you, so what better time to let loose and reinvent your style? The Cruise 2017 collections have embraced this playful ‘new you’ with a bright palette, groovy cuts, ultra-light materials and exciting prints that you couldn’t get away with on the weekly Costco stroll.
Gucci went all-out Brit-crazy with its fantasy countryside looks, and Dior embraced French garden attire with romantic floral dresses paired with more eccentric sunnies and their iconic Lady Dior bag in monochromatic leather. Michael Kors kept things glam but classy with black and white wrap dresses, while kooky Jeremy Scott – in his continued reign over the house of Moschino – was brazenly as colourful as ever. A special mention must go out to Scott’s gold-chained, mini bomber jacket purse in fuchsia, orange, green and blue; only a cruise-bound gal (or guy!) could ever get away with sporting it.
With swimwear as the inevitable mainstay of this season, we caught up with the Montreal-based Shan, which specializes in men’s and women’s couture swimwear, resort wear, lingerie and accessories, all designed and made in Quebec. Perusing their 2017 collection, we spotted inspiration from several sources – from the Far West with two-toned jewel effects and lace finishes to add a bit of mystery, to the ’70s pin-up star with cute one-pieces with floral prints and playful flares at the bottoms, and the unabashedly SEXY, which intermixes laser cut techniques and tulle for the poolside provocateur. For something versatile, their seven styles for seven days is a fail-safe. This one-tone swimsuit will literally transform seven ways, check! The men’s propositions are both sporty and stylish with patterned or plain swimming trunks that can easily be worn off the shores together with a line of shirts that effortlessly match them.
To get you pumped for your trip, start thinking about how to impress with your in-transit attire. Since you might run into someone you know at the airport, this is time to show off the fact that you’re going to be gone baby, gone! “Be bright, be bold, be you,” is the advice from Johanne Baron, vice president of design at Frank Lyman Designs, when it comes to dressing for this season. A mix of textures, refined designs and wild fantasy, their 15 shades of spring collection unapologetically salutes the return of sunshine. “This season’s new silhouettes are intriguing and refined and there’s something for everybody. Dresses are sexy and form- fitting, outlining the shape gracefully as well as hiding a multitude of sins with smartly placed pleats and tucks. We also have fit-and-flare dresses, a classic that flatters all shapes, as well as sensational fringed dresses, a perfect look for dancing nights. Every woman can find the dress for her desire and needs,” affirms Baron.
